Modelling is a method of representing and analysing processes, systems or structures by creating abstract models. This technique makes it possible to visualise and understand complex processes by mapping relevant elements and their relationships in a clear and structured format. Modelling is widely used in areas such as project management, system design and problem solving.
The modelling process
The process begins with identifying the relevant components and their interactions. This information is then represented in a model, which serves as a visual or mathematical recreation of the real system. By creating a model, various scenarios can be simulated and their effects analysed without the use of physical resources.
The benefits of modelling
A key advantage of modelling is its ability to simplify and make complex systems accessible. It enables teams to identify weaknesses and potential problems and make informed decisions. Modelling supports precise planning and helps to minimise risks by revealing potential problems at an early stage.
Differences to other methods
Similar to mind mapping and visualisation, modelling offers a structured and visual representation of information. While mind mapping is used to link ideas and concepts freely and develop creative solutions, and visualisation aims to graphically display abstract data and processes to make them more understandable, modelling focuses on the detailed replication and analysis of systems and processes. The main difference lies in the depth and precision of the representation: modelling often goes a step further by not only visualising, but also simulating and analysing in detail to enable informed decision-making and problem-solving.
Why modelling solves problems
Modelling provides a structured and visual representation of complex systems, which leads to a better understanding and more precise planning. By supporting collaboration and the ability to simulate different scenarios, modelling helps to develop innovative and effective solutions that ensure a company's long-term success.
A real-world example
One example of the application of modelling is the internal pricing model we use to show customers how quickly supposedly simple situations can become complex. The model shows all the relationships between the individual parameters and provides an overall picture of the situation, making decision-making much easier.
Modelling is an indispensable tool in modern problem solving, and its ability to present complex systems in an understandable way is crucial to the development of effective solutions.
